Who’s your Yoda

Your Mentor, your Gandalf, your Mr. Miyagi

May The Fourth Be With You Do It GIF by Star Wars

Hey there,

Let's talk about something important:

Who's your mentor?

First, let's make a few assumptions.

You're probably pretty dedicated to what you do.

If you're reading this, chances are you're a worship leader (though this really applies to any field).

And if you're committed, there's likely a part of you that's always looking to grow and improve.

Now, it's easy to think that getting better means gaining more knowledge or taking another course. Don't get me wrong, those things are valuable. But there's an old saying I believe in: “it's who, not how

When it comes to growth (in our case, becoming a better worship leader), it's really about who you're learning from. It’s the relationship that makes the difference, not just the transfer of knowledge.

So, let me ask you:

- Who are you listening to?

- Who's asking you the tough questions?

- Who's helping you see things you might be missing?

- Who's walked the path you're on now?

- Who's a few steps ahead of you in the journey?

Here's the thing: this isn't just about finding someone with more skill or ability than you. Think about sports for a second. Most coaches aren't better players than the athletes they train. But they see what the player can't and know how to bring out their best.

So, keeping all that in mind, and assuming we all want to grow (no matter our age or experience), I'll ask again: Who's your mentor?

Does a name come to mind right away? If not, is there someone you'd like it to be? And if you're drawing a blank on both counts, that's okay too. The real question is: Are you still committed to growing and being the best worship leader you can be?

My worship mentors are Lamar Boschman, Justin Rizzo, and, in my earlier years, Lorna McDougal, and since day 1, my father Geoffrey Chada. When I leave conversations with these people, I am a better person all around.

Remember, even the greats had mentors (it’s probably how they became great).

Maybe it's time to start looking for yours.

“For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers…
