The Only Thing That Matters

When all else fades away

It was after soundcheck, late on a Thursday night. The room was empty except for the faint hum of the speakers and the smell of warm cables and coffee. I sat alone at the piano, hands resting on the keys, but not playing.

I wasn’t preparing. I wasn’t rehearsing.

I was just sitting.

And in that moment, something surfaced that I had forgotten: His presence is the point.

Not the set list.

Not the transitions.

Not the sound.

Not the people.

Not even the “well done.”

Just Him.

We spend so much time learning how to become “better” worship leaders. And there’s value in that. But if we’re honest, it’s easy to start pursuing the fruit of worship and forget the root: being with Him.

His presence is hard to define, predict, or measure—so we often settle for what is measurable. Skills. Metrics. Moments.

But encounters with Him are what change us. Not just services about Him—but communion with Him.

So today, I just want to say this:

Start there.

Stay there.

Sit at His feet.

Not because it makes your ministry better.

Not because it guarantees success.

Not even because it’s your “quiet time.”

Do it because you love being with Him.

And He loves being with you.

That’s the only thing that matters.
