The Confidence Pyramid

How to grow in confidence as a worship leader

I used to be incredibly nervous before leading worship, feeling sick every Sunday morning. Performance anxiety- but why?

What was I really afraid of?

Rejection.

But you know what brings confidence?

True confidence comes from having a healthy relationship with failure.

How do you get a healthy relationship with failure? How do you become confident as a worship leader?

Well - time and experience. Here is what you are building with time and experience: the Confidence Pyramid.

Here is what I call the confidence pyramid (this is useful in other spheres of life too)

The Confidence Pyramid

Love the Lord your God with every passion of your heart, with all the energy of your being, and with every thought that is within you.’ 38 This is the great and supreme commandment. 39 And the second is like it in importance: ‘You must love your friend in the same way you love yourself.

Matthew 22:37-40
  1. Love God:

    1. IDENTITY: I know who I am - because I believe what He says

    2. CALLING: I know why I am here - because I’ve heard Him call

  2. Love yourself:

    1. JOY: I love what I do

    2. PREPARED: I can do this

  3. Love your neighbor/friend/congregation:

    1. SERVICE: I’m here to serve you

Embrace your imperfections; they make you relatable and human!

When you fail, get back up.

Know who you are and why you are there; love what you do; embrace your imperfections; they make you relatable and human! Remember, you are there to serve your congregation by uniting their worship and facilitating an encounter.

We GET to do this!
Be rooted & grounded in His love.

Bonus thought:

“Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.”

Ephesians 3:12 NLT

Why can we come into God’s presence with bold confidence? Because we KNOW we will not be rejected, but rather WELCOMED AND EMBRACED - even if we trip into His lap, we will look up and see a smile of acceptance and twinkle in His eye.
